Rhys Studt scored tries at either end of the game, as Furness defeated South Lakes rivals Windermere 29-10 at the Strawberry Grounds in Cumbria Division One.

In surprisingly good conditions, considering the amount of rain that had come down the previous day, both sides were eager to win given their slow starts to the season.

The hosts scored their first try after barely 60 seconds when Studt went over in the far corner. The game then developed into something of a dogfight with most of the action taking place between the 22 metre lines.

Matters livened up when Furness No.8 Will Mallinson had a disagreement with Windermere's No.6, as a result of which both were banished to the sin bin.

It wasn't long before the ever-improving second row Dan Speers went over for the home side's second try of the day. Furness were starting to look dangerous with the ball in hand and it was no surprise when livewire centre Taz Nueto scored their third try of the half to make the half-time score 15-0.

The home side started the second half as they had finished the first and it wasn't long before the hard-working Dan Scott scored their bonus point try, which was successfully converted by Dave Finlayson.

Unfortunately for Scott, no sooner had he scored his try than he was on his way to the sin bin and this seemed to galvanise Windermere into action as they pulled back two tries to reduce the gap to 22-10.

On one of the few occasions in the second half that Furness were allowed to complete a move, Studt ran half the length of the field for his second try of the afternoon.

Elsewhere, Millom continued their fine run of form with a well-earned 22-5 victory against Carlisle Crusaders at Wilson Park that lifted them up to seventh in the table.
