Wembley-bound Sheffield Eagles are aiming for a hat-trick of wins over Barrow when the Raiders travel to the Steel City tomorrow.

After their controversial two-point win at Craven Park early in the season – courtesy of a late penalty - Sheffield had the upper hand in the Summer Bash at Blackpool. Victory number three could be enough to keep alive their slim hopes of a Championship play-off spot.

Although their Wembley date against Widnes Vikings in the final of the inaugural 1895 Cup is only a week away, the Eagles will be keen to bring down the curtain on their home season with a winning send-off.

The Raiders may take some encouragement from the fact that they won on their last visit to the Olympic Legacy Park and they will know what to expect from the high-flying Eagles.

They will certainly know all about the home side’s main danger man – the player his coach says is ‘pure class.’

Half-back Anthony Thackeray’s partnership with Pat Walker has caused the Raiders plenty of problems in the past and referring to the pairing, Eagles boss Mark Aston says of Thackeray: “He leads by his actions and when you need something extra he gives you that. And Pat Walker has been great alongside him.”

Another of the Eagles’ high profile performers is veteran PNG star Menzie Yere. He is cup-tied, having played for Doncaster while out on loan and will miss the 1895 Cup final so tomorrow’s game could mean a fond farewell to the Olympic Legacy Stadium fans. The 35-year-old former PNG international has been with the Yorkshire outfit since 200,playing almost 300 times for them.

Aston said: “As an elder statesman he inspires the others. The respect the boys have for him is immense. He puts in some shots and the boys buzz off the back of that.”

One bonus for travelling Barrow fans is that entry to the match is by donation. There are no ticket prices.
