Dineth Thimodya’s half-century wasn’t enough for Barrow, who were cut adrift at the bottom of the Northern Premier League after a seven-wicket defeat at fellow strugglers St Annes.

Barrow won the toss and chose to bat at Vernon Road and despite losing Toby Mowat for just a single, they started reasonably well with Thimodya looking impressive as he made 72.

However, other than 23 from opener Justin Pringle, none of his partners hung around for long, as the visitors were restricted to 166-7 from their 50 overs, with Umar Allah taking 3-32 for St Annes.

Barrow’s bowlers then didn’t have an answer to St Annes opener Tim Smithies, who struck 12 fours in his 88 not out that ensured the hosts eased to victory with six overs to spare, with Ullah rounding off his good day by finishing unbeaten on 30.

The result leaves Barrow 31 points adrift of second-from-bottom Penrith at the foot of the table.
