Half-centuries from Tom New and Stephan Marillier condemned Cumberland to a six-wicket defeat, as Norfolk successfully chased down 189 on the final day of their Minor Counties Championship match at Furness.

It was Norfolk's first victory of the season in red-ball cricket and it completed a terrific turnaround from the visitors after they had conceded a first-innings deficit of 53 runs.

They had started to claw their way back on day two, when they left Cumberland struggling on 90-8 at the close, leaving the home side with much to do if they were going to set a challenging target.

They were just about able to do so as South African veteran Jacques du Toit made 60 from the middle order, as Cumberland were bowled out for 135 before lunch.

The runs didn't come easily for Norfolk's top order, as Cumberland's bowlers fought hard to keep their side in the contest.

Sam Arthurton (13) was the first wicket to fall, as he was dismissed by Toby Bulcock, who also accounted for Jason Reynolds (20) after Adam Syddall had bowled Matthew Plater (25) to reduce the visitors to 84-3.

However the fourth-wicket pairing of New and Marillier took the game away from Cumberland, as they put on 95 between them while they were together at the crease. Although New was run out for 58, Marillier was unbeaten on 62 by the time Norfolk reached their target.
