Nathan Waterston clobbered a half-century as Furness racked up a 56-run victory at Haverigg in the South Cumbria T20 Cup at Poolside on Thursday evening.

Former Barrow AFC striker Waterston, who rejoined former club Workington last week, top-scored with 54 off 45 balls, including six fours, as Furness posted 168-6 from their 20 overs.

There was also a spectacular 32 off only 13 deliveries from skipper Garry Thompson, who smashed four huge sixes towards the end of the visitors’ innings, while there was also a contribution of 27 from opener Kris McLean.

Haverigg captain Drew Postlethwaite was the pick of the home side’s bowlers as he took 2-34, but Furness’ attack had far more success during their opponents’ reply.

Postlethwaite led by example with the bat as he made 54 off 53 balls, as he did his best to hold Haverigg’s innings together, but only a defiant 26 off 12 deliveries from Tomas Hawdon provided resistance otherwise.

The hosts were restricted almost throughout what was ultimately a fruitless chase, as they finished on 112-8, with Elliot Maxfield taking an excellent 3-21, while Sachith Pathinara and Sam Stephens chipped in with two wickets each.

In the same competition, Liam Curwen hammered a magnificent 96 as Dalton held off a spirited chase from Lindal Moor, as they won by 26 runs.

Curwen’s knock helped his side to 177-4 and that was a total they manage to defend despite 64 from Lindal’s Sri Lankan professional Janith de Silva as the visitors finished on 151-6.

Barrow will be in T20 action tomorrow when they welcome Penrith and Netherfield to Ernest Pass for the latest round of Group One fixtures in the Northern Premier League’s Readers competition.
