The 2019 Cumbria County Athletics Championships were held at Furness Academy last Saturday and five local junior athletes finished top of their standings.

Leading the way was sprinter Ryan Wilson, who was the first from Barrow and Furness Striders AC to emerge triumphant, as he won the men’s under-17 100m in one of the day’s earlier races.

In a field of six, Wilson was the odd one out, as the other five runners were all racing for Sedbergh School, but he left them all trailing in his wake as he crossed the line in 11.6 seconds, one tenth ahead of second-placed Charlie Churchouse.

His clubmate Toby Wilson was the next county champion to come from the Striders as he finished more than six metres in front of Sedbergh’s Max Preston with a winning distance of 31.73 metres.

Leven Valley AC also had a handful of their junior runners in action, with Olesia Winder showing she can master the middle distances as well, as she won girls’ under-15 1500m in 4:59.1. Her teammate Jess Bailey was third after clocking 5:06.9.

Back on the field, the Striders’ Laura Brown claimed gold in the girls’ under-15 shot putt as produced a distance of 7.52 metres to push Seaton AC’s Katey Quayle into second place.

There was then a Barrow one-two in the girls’ under-11 600m, with Mahiya Mohan winning in 2:02.7, just over four seconds ahead of colleague Esme Doyle.

There was almost another winner from Leven Valley in the girl’ under-13 150m, where Kira Jones came second to Sedbergh’s Tink Longworth with a time of 20.8 seconds, while the Striders’ Hannah Bushby (21.4) was third.

Jones also had to settle for silver behind Longworth in the long jump, while in the boys’ event Barrow’s Myles Farren was second with a best distance of 3.59m.

Brown almost claimed a second gold in the girls’ 800m as she finished behind Copeland AC’s Ebony Blackwell in 2:30.7.
