Windermere consolidated themselves in third place of Cumbria Division Two after recording an enthralling 52-29 victory against South Cumbria rivals Furness at Dawes Meadow last Saturday.

The two teams made the most of conditions ideal for running rugby by scoring 13 tries between them, with eight of those coming for the hosts, who are now three points clear of fourth-placed Egremont in the table.

Furness were admittedly a little short of players, as they were only able to name two players on their bench, but they opened the scoring as they made the most of a slow start from Windermere.

From that point, however, the hosts took control, with their forward pack, including man of the match Ollie Askew, giving a solid base from scrums and line-outs, which in turn gave their backs good ball to work with.

It was those behind the scrum who ran amok, with winger Tom Atkinson, fly-half Bertie Hodgson, who finished with a personal haul of 22 points, and full back Daelon Hernandez all crossing the whitewash twice.

Brothers Moses and Josh Dawson were the other two Windermere players on the list of scorers, with the latter moonlighting as a winger because of injures, instead of taking to the field in his usual position in the back row.

Furness rallied late on, after the hosts had emptied their bench, with a few late scores to finish with five tries of their own.
