Barrow AFC manager Ian Evatt was delighted to see his side’s long wait for a victory come to an end after they deservedly ran out 2-0 winners at Aldershot Town.

The Bluebirds displayed a much stronger spine at the Recreation Ground, not looking any inch the ‘soft touch’ Evatt was fed up of seeing his team referred as.

This was helped by a change of system that gave AFC some much greater stability, with the back three of Brian Wilson, Josh Granite and Dan Jones repelling all that came their way.

Their efforts were eventually rewarded, as goals from Tyler Smith and Jack Hindle ended a six-game losing run and gave Barrow their first three points since October 6.

Evatt said: “A month in football is a long time sometimes and we’ve really been hurt in the last month or so, with the way the results have gone.

“Take one or two performances out of it, we haven’t been playing too badly, it’s just been spells of games that have cost us – 20 minutes here and there where teams have scored one or two past us.

“We decided to change the shape this week and we’ve worked very hard on the training ground, we’ve stuck together as a squad and a group and today we’ve seen the rewards for that.

“I thought it was an outstanding performance.”

The display gave the Bluebirds just their second away win of the season, at a side who’ve been fairly strong on their own patch prior to this game.

With high-flying Wrexham coming to Holker Street on Tuesday, it was imperative they got something out of it and they can now go into the clash with the Dragons with renewed confidence.

Evatt said: “We have the players to do it, we’ve seen that today, especially now we’ve got Jacob [Blyth] back.

“Jacob was outstanding in the second half – that was his first start in a long, long time and he led the line perfectly well.

“He gave us an out ball, he was a handful and a threat and he worked pretty well with Tyler, so it’s pleasing that it worked but this is just the start.

“There’s loads of improvement to come and we just need to keep working hard, keep our heads down and try and get another result on Tuesday.”
