Dover Athletic are surprisingly struggling in the National League this season, but Barrow AFC midfielder Luke Burgess won’t be underestimating them when he faces them tomorrow.

The Bluebirds will be aiming for their first away win of the season when they travel from one corner of the country to another at the weekend and they’ll be up against a side who haven’t won in their last nine games.

The Whites did, however, lift themselves off the bottom of the table on Tuesday night thanks to a spirited performance at Sutton United, which resulted in a 2-2 draw after they had fallen two goals behind.

That comeback, if nothing else, should certainly focus Barrow minds at the Crabble Athletic Ground.

Burgess said: “You can’t underestimate any team in this league because, on any given day, they can beat you.

“We’ll have to try to make things happen on Saturday, even though it will be hard because they’ll be battling all the way trying to get a win themselves.

“Hopefully we can get the luck that hasn’t been going our way in some games – we’ve certainly hit enough post and bar lately.”

That was certainly the case in the 2-1 defeat against Gateshead on Tuesday night, where AFC struck the woodwork once in each half.

What was particularly frustrating about that night, however, was that it was the perfect opportunity for Barrow to record back-to-back victories for the first time since December 2017.

The fact that they led for most of the first half, thanks to Tyler Smith’s sixth goal of the season, made that especially the case.

With manager Ian Evatt calling for his players to start being focused across the 90 minutes, Burgess knows the disappointing result against the Heed makes three points at Dover doubly important.

He said: “We need a win, after what happened on Tuesday, and I’d certainly take a win right now, as would the rest of the lads.”
