PAUL Crarey was annoyed by the number of costly errors Barrow Raiders made as they went down 36-16 to Batley Bulldogs in the Betfred Championship Shield Super Eights yesterday.

The Raiders had been ahead after just four minutes through a try from Georgy Gambaro, but lost their foothold on the contest after that.

Batley duly punished them, with winger Jonathon Campbell plundering a hat-trick of tries, and Raiders head coach Crarey was left frustrated.

“I just thought we conceded some soft tries in the first half - two from set pieces from scrums where we bit hard on edges when we just needed to hold our space,” said Crarey.

“We put one shape play on in the first few minutes and walked in on the right edge, and after that we didn’t have any good ball.

“We’re a shadow of what we were when we had a full side, and we’re so busted up it’s unbelievable.

“I’ll keep defending them, but it’s little things. We had 16 individual errors and 50 per cent completion rate across the board, and it’s not going to win you anything.”

Barrow now head to Dewsbury Rams this Sunday, but could be without second row pair Jono Smith and Bradd Crellin after both went off injured.

“Jono Smith looks like he’s broken a rib and he couldn’t continue, and Bradd Crellin suffered a head injury,” said Crarey.

“Danny Morrow played and he was the best option in the centre, but he probably needs an operation on his knee - and that’s where we’re at.

“We’re looking at going to Dewsbury next week with a patched-up side, and if we can get to the end of the season and stay up it will be a minor miracle.”
