Warnings have once again been issued to ‘stay at home’ as authorities seek to avoid a repeat of last weekend’s antics.

Last weekend, the Lake District was teeming with people who were treating the coronavirus pandemic as some sort of bank holiday weekend. Some were fell walking, biking and even swimming.

Social media was set ablaze by snaps of holiday-going crowds enjoying the county’s top tourist spots, and police and health professionals have rightly come down hard on those value a weekend getaway above the safety of the vulnerable.

Outdoor pursuits are inherently dangerous, no matter how experienced you may be, and a call out from emergency services could not only take them away from much more pressing matters but also exposes them to an increased risk of contracting the virus.

Unfortunately, the idiocy doesn’t appear to have been confined to the weekend. As we report on page two of today’s The Mail, a woman in Ulverston was photographed riding an inflatable flamingo in the canal.

The flamingo rider’s actions came despite the Government introducing new restrictions on Monday meaning that people should now only leave the house to exercise once a day, shop for basic necessities, for medical needs and for work, not for high jinks.
