POLICE investigating a Christmas Day sexual assault on Walney are following up information provided by the public during door-to-door enquiries.

A woman in her 50s was sexually assaulted on a public footpath off Solway Drive, Walney, sometime between 4.30pm and 4.45pm on Sunday.

The woman bravely fought off the man who fled, possibly in the direction of North Scale.

The victim was very badly shaken and sustained a minor injury. Police are continuing to support and update the victim.

Police completed a more extensive search of the scene and surrounding area on Tuesday and Barrow CID said it is following up on the information given by residents.

The suspect is described as white, in his early 20s, around 5ft 7in and of medium build.

His front teeth were in a very poor dental condition, he was understood to be under the influence of alcohol and he was wearing dark jogging bottoms and a similarly dark-coloured hooded top.
