FIREFIGHTERS were called to a fire which had been maliciously started on a grassy area of Walney in the early hours of the morning.

The on-call crew from the island was sent to Central Drive at just before 1am today to reports of a fire in the open.

A small fire had been started in gorse and grass at the side of the road, which was extinguished by firefighters using a hose reel jet.

The crew said the fire had been started deliberately and described it as a "nuisance".
