IT was full steam ahead for Millom Discovery Centre as their railway weekend delighted train lovers in the town and beyond.

The centre held its annual railway weekend to showcase some of the area's finest model railways.

Jill Mojonnier, a volunteer at the Discovery Centre, said: "It went really well. Saturday was absolutely heaving.

"Lots of people came down and seemed to really enjoy the exhibits we had.

"It's brilliant to invite children along and see them learning about the history of the railway."

Organisers also welcomed Derek Faulds, the chairman of the Furness Line Action Group.

Mrs Mojonnier said: "We also invited the people from FLAG and they came down and had a busy day.

"People were interested to know what was going on. They were able to talk to people about their concerns, especially things like the upkeep of the line and the future of the ticket office here at Millom.

"They even informed people about the new Sunday service which should be coming next year."

Organisers were also able to see an old favourite return to the station four years after its last appearance in the town.

Mrs Mojonnier said: "We brought the spectacular Meccano model back for the weekend and it always attracts so much attention.

"It was voted the best Meccano model ever made.

"You can't buy the parts for it anymore because they just don't make them, so you can't replicate it even if you tried."

As well as FLAG, the event last Saturday and Sunday also attracted representatives from other rail groups.

David Rounce, from Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, said: "We all had lots of fun showing off our wares. It was a really nice weekend.

"We were there representing the railway and our Preservation Society was also there talking about our Train from Spain.

"I even took my own railway set along and we all loved it.

"We're always very pleased to support local museums and it's fantastic to get out and meet new people and spread our message."

Mrs Mojonnier said: "We were thrilled to welcome the railway and they had their own models going round all day, as well as giving people information."
