AN NHS worker pleaded guilty to racially abusing a Slovakian hotel worker.

Beverley Atherton, 50, appeared at Furness Magistrates' Court yesterday, where she pleaded guilty to racially aggravated harassment by words.

Mrs Atherton, of Hoghton Road, St Helens, admitted verbally abusing the member of staff after he intervened in an argument she was having with her husband while staying at the Burnside hotel in Bowness on April 9.

Appearing in court without representation, she said: "I am ashamed of myself.

"I work for the NHS with people who are not from my culture and this is out of character."

Presiding magistrate Mr Steve Sim issued a fine of £110 and ordered her to pay a £30 victim surcharge and court costs of £85.
