A POPULAR agricultural show will be in full swing tomorrow (Wednesday August 1) with attractions for visitors of all ages.

The Cartmel Agricultural Show will take place at Cartmel Racecourse with gates opening at 8.30am.

According to the Met Office, the forecast is cloudy with a low chance of rain, which has not affected the show, as there are over 3,000 entries for cattle, sheep, horses, horticulture and much more.

The main attraction for visitors this year will be the prestigious Shetland Pony Grand National, in which children under five feet tall, aged nine to 14, will go head to head to raise money for the Bob Champion Cancer Trust.

Sarah Dickinson, the show secretary, said: "We are very excited for the Shetland Pony Grand National and we are delighted to host an auction for very good cause - Cumbria Cerebral Palsy.

"Hopefully the weather will be kind to us this year, and we hope that everyone comes along to the show and enjoys the day.

"We are very enthusiastic and proud to have the highest standard of cattle in the North West.

"There will be plenty of food and samples to enjoy - there is something for everyone."

Visitors will not go hungry this year with plenty of local produce on sale in an extended food hall marquee, as well as various food and drink related events, including a gin bar.

Michelin starred-chef, Simon Rogan, from L'Enclume in Cartmel, will be demonstrating his cooking skills in the food theatre.

Stuart Higginson, of Higginsons of Grange, will also be demonstrating his meat cutting culinary skills, with the cuts being auctioned afterwards for charity Cumbria Cerebral Palsy.

Not only this, but the show will host Cartmel's own "Ready, Steady, Cook" with butcher Jon Watson and chef Dan Akrigg showing visitors what to do with the best cuts of Lake District meats and produce.

Plenty of entertainment will be held for children, as the show boasts bouncy castles, archery, a mini zoo with reptiles, meerkats, owls, a quiz and the opportunity to try circus tricks.

An array of other attractions are scheduled for the day, including a wrestling competition with the Cumberland & Westmorland wrestling team, a climbing wall and arts and crafts.

Dog related events in the main ring will run throughout the day, with a show from the Vale of Lune Harriers Hunt Hounds, terrier racing and dog agility running throughout the day.

Vintage tractors and machinery will be on display and the Grand Parade of prize winning livestock will take place in the afternoon.

Wool spinning demonstrations will also be available alongside the history of wool, as well as willow weaving and coppicing demonstrations.

The show is offering a free shuttle bus service from Cark railway station to the show ground for visitors.
