AN animal charity is searching for the perfect owners to take on their unorthodox pets.

From Ducks to Degu, Cumbria Hen and Animal Rescue takes on animals that would otherwise be abandoned due to the owners simply not being able to look after them anymore.

Do you have a love of snakes? Do you have enough land to keep a few pigs, or hens? Do you have a pond large enough to home a duck or two?

Cumbria Hen and Animal Rescue has more than 30 animals of all different species waiting to move into their forever homes.

Eddy Wright, from the Barrow-based rescue service, said: “On average, we collect hens from egg-farms three times a year, that otherwise would be deemed ‘end of life’ and rehome them where they live out a happy and healthy existence. This is just one example of our work.

“Just recently we have had another success story and rehomed several pigs with one person who has given them a few acres of land to run around on. Happy pigs make us happy.”

One of the rescue service’s main goals for the future is to set up school and club visits around the Cumbria area.

They are hoping to include petting sessions with some of the smaller animals - in order to make the session fun and interactive.

By doing this, the service based in Redley Lane seek to inspire and educate children about the joy of these animals, and give them a better understanding of what it involves to take care of them.

The service has made clear that anyone interested in the opportunity to adopt one of these furry friends must be fully vetted, to ensure that both the animals and the owners suit each other.

They have also offered to arrange follow-up visits to make sure the animals and their new owners are coping.

They are looking primarily for people with experience handling the respective animals. But most of all, people who understand the animal, and will give them the love that they deserve.
