Earlier this week, Britain's top 20 fish and chip shops of 2018 were named – however, we all know there’s too many to mention.

We asked our social media audience which local chippies they think would be deserving of a nomination for the National Fish & Chip Awards.

1. The Old Smithy, Leece Lane, Roose

Furness’ most popular chippy has bounced back from a major incident three years ago, when a car crash almost demolished the building. Rebuilt and rejuvenated, our Facebook and Twitter users praised the “lovely staff” and the fact that it does gluten-free food.

2. The Chippy Bank, King Street, Ulverston

More than 40 years in business, and the Chippy Bank is still going strong. It seems it’s still an old favourite for our readers in Ulverston and from further afield, with the restaurant often full on any given night of the week.

3. Deano’s Plaice, Holborn Hill, Millom

The West Cumbrian vote went to Deano’s Plaice – opened less than three years ago, there is some speculation over whether it is the UK’s smallest chippy! Wedged in between two houses, it occupies a space that is just 2.5 metres wide.

4. York Street Chippy, Barrow

Although the opening hours are not always easy to negotiate, when you catch York Street Chippy open, you’re in for a treat. The unassuming residential building has long been a favourite of Mail readers over the years, and continues to be up there with the best.

5. The Olympic, Buccleuch Street, Barrow

Refurbished and reopened early last year, The Olympic is a favourite of Barrovians with its wide selection of meal deals and high quality food. Owned by the family behind Ulverston’s Lakeland Continental, The Olympic has become equally well-known in recent years.

6. Kent Street Chippy, Barrow

Even though it’s not really visible from any of the main roads in Barrow, Kent Street Chippy is a hidden gem. Those in the know regard it as an important part of the community, serving a vast area between Roose Road and Greengate Street.

7. Andy’s Takeaway, Hastings Street, Walney

A previous winner of The Mail’s Chip Shop of the Year Award, Andy’s has continued to thrive, also topping a recent poll of Barrow’s best. With lots of options, you might find that the Walney takeaway is busy at both dinner time and tea time.

8. Polly’s Plaice, Duke Street, Askam

We know for sure that there are plenty of commuters who travel up and down the west coast, and make a regular stop-off at this popular Askam chippy. Situated close to the train station too, there’s no excuse for not paying a visit soon.

9. Matties, Ainslie Street, Barrow

Praised by our users for it’s sizeable portions, Matties is another that has won The Mail’s own awards in the past. Still as strong as ever, the staff there guarantee a high standard, both inside the takeaway and on the plate.

10. Vinegar Jones, Royal Square, Bowness

Clearly a winner with visitors to the Lakes, Vinegar Jones has recovered well from a major fire on the premises five years ago. Back to its best, it is a great place for a takeaway or a sit-down meal in its upstairs restaurant.
