AN Eddie Stobart truck hit a railway bridge in Barrow and became stuck underneath it, causing substantial damage to the vehicle and lengthy delays to trains.

The HGV struck Salthouse Road bridge at about 2pm on Saturday and needed to be assessed for structural damage.

One of the signs on the bridge above was dislodged as a result of the impact.

Police were called to the scene and a section of the road between the Vulcan Road junction and the Durham Street junction was shut while recovery work took place.

Homeowners along the street reported hearing a loud bang and, after going outside, saw the HGV had become wedged.

Many train services between Barrow and Lancaster were delayed due to the Salthouse Road bridge collision.

The 2.55pm, 3.25pm and 4.29pm services from Barrow to Lancaster were all significantly delayed as were the Barrow-bound services from Lancaster, which were due in at 2.36pm and 4.24pm.

The road was later reopened and the badly damaged truck was recovered from the scene.

It isn't the first time a HGV has struck Salthouse Road bridge.
