A SERIES of pictures have been sent to enforcement officers after household waste was dumped at a recycling centre in Barrow.

A mound of rubbish including four vacuum cleaners, an ironing board, car tyres, a TV and a stained mattress has been dumped at the recycling centre in the car park of the Park Leisure Centre in Barrow.

The latest fly-tipping incident follows a series of investigations after tonnes of rubbish was dumped at sites across Barrow just after Christmas.

Sites at Morrisons, Tesco, the Park Leisure Centre and Asda were blighted with mountains of binbags and festive litter - including turkey carcasses, nappies and house guttering. Because the waste was contaminated, the council's streetcare team had no choice but to send it all to landfill.

Determined to bring those responsible to justice, a team of 16 binmen, road sweepers and enforcement officers combed through the rubbish and managed to identify a number of people from three sites - Morrisons, the leisure centre and Tesco Extra.

Council officers identified a total of 52 alleged fly-tippers who were being given the option of either paying a £400 fine or taking their chances in the magistrates' court - which could result in an even bigger bill.

Anyone who has evidence or information about fly-tipping can email streetscene@barrowbc.gov.uk to pass the details on to Barrow Borough Council.
