A CONCERT paying tribute to a much-loved community man will see a renowned band head to Barrow.

The Blackburn Citadel Band will perform at Barrow's Salvation Army headquarters to raise money for the Royal British Legion.

It was organised by Richard Walsh, a supporter of both organisations for a number of years, who died in May aged 89.

Lieutenant Martin Davison, leader of the Barrow branch, said: "Richard was a great organiser and raised thousands of pounds for many good causes, but the Salvation Army and Royal British Legion were perhaps closest to his heart.

"Even at his bedside in his final days, Richard was thinking through this event and was keen to make the concert a success for everyone concerned.

"It seems right that the event is still going ahead and what Richard originally planned is taking place."

The Blackburn Salvation Army band have a long tradition of music making, and boast a wide diversity of membership, from pupils at school and college through to senior members with over 50 years of experience in the band.

They are led and trained by bandmaster Eric Milest, a professional music teacher who gives his time to support the band's work in the community.

Under Mr Milest's guidance, the group have toured Europe, including performing a series of concerts in Berlin alongside the German Salvation Army.

Mr Davison said: "We are really looking forward to a great night.

"The band have a good following across the UK and it is very kind of them to give their time for this special charity event in our town."

The concert will take place on Saturday October 21, almost two weeks after what would have been Mr Walsh's 90th birthday.

It will feature traditional brass band favourites as well as music from stage shows and television theme tunes.

Tickets can be purchased from the cafe reception of the Salvation Army community hub in Abbey Road between 9am until 3pm Monday to Friday, or from 10am until 2pm on the day of the event.
