EXCLUSION zones for louts and anti-social offenders will continue to be enforced to ensure Barrow and Dalton remain safe for residents.

At a meeting of the Barrow Borough Council executive committee members moved to extend public spaces protection orders implemented on nine areas across the borough.

The orders give power to the police and PCSOs to tackle persistent anti-social behaviour in areas designated as public places.

The parts of the borough which will be covered by the fresh PSPOs are:

  • Barrow Park
  • Green Heart Den
  • Barrow Town Centre
  • Vickerstown
  • Four Groves
  • Dalton Leisure Centre
  • Ormsgill Community Centre
  • Dalton Town Centre
  • Vulcan Road estate

Leader of the council Dave Pidduck said the orders would crack down on a "tiny minority" of offenders.

He said: "Dalton Road was one of the areas where you could drink in public. The problem is that you try and do this with a softer touch. We had an event in Barrow Park, a concert, and they were quite successful. They were great but there was just a tiny minority of people that brought drink and started to spoil it for other people. It was a tiny minority that could wreck things for the majority of people who want to enjoy themselves."

In a report prepared for committee members it was recommended the order be extended for another three years to 2020. It stated the risk of anti-social behaviour happening in the absence of an order was "significant."

Councillor Pidduck added: "It's the kind of thing that any council will do to protect the majority of people allowing them to enjoy themselves.

"I want people to go out on a night, I want families to go out and go to a restaurant and enjoy themselves without the risk of some person worse for wear spoiling it."
