WITH a campaign in full flight to bring an aircraft carrier back to Britain, it could be the latest in a long line of Barrow-built vessels in museums.

HMS Hermes was laid down in 1944 and was in service with the Royal Navy between 1959 and 1984.

Having been retired in March, it could be the latest in a long line of vessels to feature in museums.

The first Royal Navy sub, Holland 1, was built at Vickers in Barrow in 1901.

After being retrieved from the seabed in 1981, the vessel has been on show in the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport, Hampshire, since 1983.

The incredible work of Vickers is displayed worldwide, with the Japanese battleship Mikasa on show at Mikasa Park in Yokosuka, Japan.

Tallinn's Lennusadam musuem in Estonia features the Barrow-built EML Lembit.

Laid down in 1935, the pre-Second World War submarine was lost for a number of years, before the Evening Mail reported it had been found by Barrow-based John Howard in 1998.

Hauled out of the water in 2011, the submarine has been on display ever since.
