A LAKE District route is seeing more than 60 road traffic crashes each year, a Freedom of Information (FOI) request has revealed.
The A591 between Keswick and Windermere saw 95 collisions in 2025, the highest figure recorded between 2023 and July 2026.
It was also an increase of 48.4 per cent on the 64 crashes recorded by Cumbria Constabulary on the route in 2024.
Data was revealed in response to an FOI, submitted by Newsquest Cumbria.
The A595 between Distington and Whitehaven also recorded its highest number of crashes in recent years in 2025 at 40.
This was an increase of 53.8 per cent on the 26 recorded in 2024.
A spokesperson for Cumbria Police said: "We continually analyse collision data to understand the causes and ensure our enforcement, engagement and prevention activity is targeted where it is most needed.
"Our message remains the same: every road user has a responsibility to drive safely and help keep Cumbria's roads safe for everyone.
"While year-on-year collision figures can fluctuate, road safety remains a priority."
The spokesperson said: "We recognise concerns around the A591 and the increase in collisions between Distington and Whitehaven."
Police said 11 serious injury road traffic collisions were recorded between Keswick and Windermere in 2025.
There were no fatal collisions.
Cumbria Constabulary was asked in the FOI whether it was undertaking work to address the number of serious collisions on the A591 between Keswick and Windermere.
Cumbria Constabulary's FOI response said: "We currently have seven active mobile camera sites on the A591 Keswick and Windermere"
It said: "Police forces in the United Kingdom are routinely required to provide statistics to government bodies and the recording criteria is set nationally.
"However, the systems used for recording these figures are not generic, nor are the procedures used locally in capturing the data."
A66 figures
On the A66 between Workington and Cockermouth, crashes fell year-on-year, from 25 in 2023 to 21 in 2024 and 18 in 2025.
Up to July 2026, Cumbria Constabulary recorded six crashes between Workington and Cockermouth.
The Cumbria Police spokesperson said: "We welcome the reduction in collisions on the A66, but we are not complacent and will continue our proactive work with partners to improve safety on the route."
