Barrow’s Liam Livingstone continued his good form with bat and ball despite defeat in his first game playing and captaining the London Spirit in The Hundred at Lord’s.
Livingstone top-scored for the Spirit with 69 off 40 balls as they lost to Manchester Super Giants by seven runs on Thursday (July 23).
In the opening game of the Hundred for both the Spirit and the Super Giants, the latter set the former 138 to win at the Home of Cricket.
Livingstone took 2 wickets for 14 runs as the Super Giants amassed their score – Tim Seifert top-scored with 67 off 47 deliveries for the Manchester-based franchise in their batting innings.
In the chase, matters got thrilling thanks to Livingstone’s impressive innings, but the Barrovian could not get his new side over the line.
He was eventually bowled by Sonny Baker with the Spirit needing nine runs off three balls.
Talking after the game, Livingstone, according to Sky Sports, said: “We couldn't get over the line, a little disappointed.
“It was a good game of cricket. Just a shame we fell short.”
He added: “It was one of those pitches where they were probably about par. We just got ourselves too far behind the run rate to catch up at the end.
“Like I said, a little bit rusty and disappointed. We bowled some really good stuff through the middle and dragged them back towards the end. It's a pretty decent start, and hopefully we can build on this.”
The Barrovian moved to the London Spirit from the Birmingham Phoenix – who he had represented in every edition of The Hundred since its beginning.
He was announced as the Spirit’s captain in June and runs the show at Lord’s alongside world-class head coach Andy Flower.
Livingstone’s thrilling innings in The Hundred at Lord’s on Thursday comes after he won the Vitality T20 Blast 2026 Player of the Tournament.
He finished the tournament playing for Lancashire with more than 450 runs at a strike rate of just over 164 from the 10 innings he played.
Additionally, with the ball in hand, Livingstone took 12 wickets at an economy rate of 7.75.
London Spirit will play Trent Rockets in their second game on Sunday (July 26).
