Ulverston’s historic Roxy cinema is set to enter its next phase of restoration as the volunteer team behind the project outlined new plans to residents.
The Roxy Collective hosted an event on Wednesday evening (December 3) to update supporters on progress since the building underwent roof repairs and a full repaint in 2024.
The team has since been busy planning further improvements behind the scenes.
The group is now preparing for Phase 2 of the project which will be funded through the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal’s Place Programme.
Chair of The Roxy Collective Suzy Garnett told attendees the next stage would focus on rewiring the building, addressing long-standing heating problems and transforming the foyer into a more welcoming space.
Ms Garnett said: “We would not be where we are today without the belief and generosity of our community and our funders. The Roxy exists for Ulverston, and every step we take is about securing this building for future generations.
“The Roxy Collective remains deeply grateful to everyone who has donated, either directly or through the crowdfunder, as well as to Ulverston Town Council, Ulverston BID, the Department for Levelling Up, Borderlands and Westmorland and Furness Council, and CGP Ltd.
"CGP have, to date, been very modest about their backing, but their support has made a real difference to the speed and scale of progress so far.”
Local interior designer Anna Bennett, from Grove Designs, also shared an initial concept for the redesigned foyer, offering the community a first look at how the entrance to the cinema and museum could evolve.
The event brought together long-time supporters of the building alongside new residents interested in getting involved.
CGP Chairman Richard Parsons said: “We’re always keen to support projects that help the local community, so we were pleased to contribute to the Roxy Collective. There are plenty of film fans at CGP, and we love having an independent cinema in the area.
"The work they’ve done so far is very impressive - the outside of the building looks great. We’re looking forward to seeing the next phase of the refurbishments.”
The update was followed by a raffle and festive quiz hosted by the Laurel and Hardy Museum with guests enjoying mince pies, mulled wine and informal discussions about the future of the venue.
