Two award-nominated carers have highlighted the 'vital role' such workers play in the Furness community, according to the local MP.

Ashleigh Harvey has been shortlisted for Domiciliary Carer of the Year at the National Care Awards 2025, whilst Joy Turnbull was named as a finalist for the Sara Berrio Care Champion Award.

Both employees of Lakeland Care, Michelle Scrogham took the time to visit them and the wider care team last week.

She said: "Joy and Ashleigh have come into the care sector later in their careers, but their dedication and compassion is clear to see.

“It was a privilege to meet them and the wider team, and I want to thank them all for the vital role they play in our community.

"I also had a chance to talk to the team about issues their sector is facing both nationally and locally, and there was definitely useful information to take away with me."

Lakeland Care operates across Barrow, Ulverston, Millom and the surrounding areas - with the whole team said to be filled with 'immense pride' at the two nominations.

CEO Marge Smyth commented: “We could not be prouder of Joy and Ashleigh - to be shortlisted for a National Care Award is an incredible achievement.

"These awards are among the most prestigious in the entire sector, with thousands of nominations from across the country."

Ashleigh progressed from carer to senior and now care supervisor at Lakeland Care, whilst Joy is a care and support worker who uses her time away from work to volunteer at a number of local sports clubs.

Mrs Smyth added: "For two of our carers here in Barrow to be recognised at this level is a huge honour, not just for them, but for the whole of South Cumbria.

"It shows the outstanding quality of care that our staff deliver every single day, and it puts our community firmly on the national map.”
