Homes have been evacuated in a south Cumbrian village this afternoon after a suspected piece of ordnance was discovered at a residential address.

Police were called to Newton Cross Road in Newton-in-Furness just after 11am and a number of properties have been temporarily evacuated.
A bomb disposal team attended the scene with Cumbria Police setting up a 100-metre cordon as a precaution.

A spokesperson for Cumbria Police said: "Cumbria Police were contacted at 11.07am today (26 Aug) to a report of a suspected ordnance having been found at an address in Newton-in-Furness.
As a precaution, a 100m cordon has been put in place, resulting in a number of nearby residential premises having been temporarily evacuated."
The Ministry of Defence confirmed that an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Search Regiment had been called out at the request of police.

An MOD spokesperson said: "We can confirm an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from 11EOD&S Regiment was called out to a possible item of ordnance in the Furness area at the request of Cumbria Police."
