TWO missing walkers were rescued overnight after finding themselves stranded in a crag on Scafell Pike. 

Duddon and Furness and Wasdale Mountain Rescue Teams received a call at 10pm last night (Monday) and started searching the Upper Esk for the hikers. 

They found them in a crag near Little Narrow Cove.

"When found both casualties were extremely cold," a spokesperson from Duddon and Furness MRT said. A Maritime and Coastguard Agency helicopter was called for assistance 'as the evacuation would have been lengthy.

The spokesperson added: "After some re-warming the casualties were lowered from the crag and taken to the waiting helicopter for evacuation to Wasdale MRT base for further re-warming. We were stood down around 5am."

The team of volunteers covers an area of approximately 655kmsq and is on standby 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
