A NOTORIOUS criminal from Barrow has been sentenced for stealing food from a major supermarket store.

David Gilliam, of St. Quintin Avenue pleaded guilty to theft from a shop at the first opportunity at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court on May 20.

The court heard Gillam was caught stealing 15 packets of meat belonging to a Tesco store in Barrow on January 17 this year.

The court was told the food had a total value of £120.

Magistrates ordered the defendant – aged 39 - to pay every single penny back to the Tesco store in compensation as punishment for the offence.

No order for costs were made.
