FLOOD alerts are in place for a number of areas throughout Cumbria this evening, as rain batters the county.

Flood alerts have been placed on area's right across the county for this evening, May 22 into tomorrow, May 23 with people being warned to avoid driving or walking through flood water and avoid low lying paths throughout the county.

There are currently five rivers in the county with active flood alerts placed on them, these are:

  • Upper River Eden
  • Rivers Caldew and Petteril
  • Rivers Cocker, Marron and Derwent
  • Rivers Ehen, Calder, Irt and Esk
  • Rivers Duddon, Crake and Mill Beck

The Met Office said: "We are monitoring rainfall and river levels and are checking rivers for blockages in the area.

"Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water.

"We will continue to monitor the forecast and re-issue this alert if necessary."
