Muncaster Castle in Cumbria is set to stage a Medieval Festival this month.

The event, taking place from May 25 to June 2, features the castle's recently debuted Weapons Hall as its centrepiece along with staged “battles”, “storming” of the castle, and a brand new medieval banquet.

Ewan Frost-Pennington from Muncaster Castle said: "We are really stepping things up a notch.

"We want visitors to be much more than spectators and to join in all the amazing things going on."

The nine-day festival transforms the castle into a medieval fayre populated with visitors travelling back in time to the age of knights, kings, princesses and peasants.

Activities on offer include jousting, archery, axe throwing, and sword skill sessions.

Visitors can also participate in staged "battles", engage in warrior training, and youngsters can try "storming the castle".

Mr Frost-Pennington said: "The real value of this is seeing the joy in the eyes of youngsters as they take part in these events.

"That is when you know they are learning about our history and heritage – and having a really good time as well.

"We're thrilled to be hosting the Medieval Festival over the half term break. It’s a great opportunity for families to have fun and learn something new."

In addition to the medieval experiences, there will be daily Fools shows, bird of prey displays, and live music.

On June 1, a Medieval Banquet will see visitors feasting on a two-course buffet on the castle lawns.

The Red Wyverns, a historical re-enactment society, are also partnering with the castle to share the customs of medieval England with attendees.
