Dalton Castle has been closed 'until further notice' over fears surrounding its safety.

The Friends of Dalton Castle, a group of volunteers who manage the site on a day to day basis, revealed the news on Thursday, May 9.

The group explained that the decision had been made due to a 'sudden and unexpected change in policy by the National Trust', who own the building.

They said: "The Friends of Dalton Castle, who have been responsible for keeping Dalton Castle open for the past 30 years, are working hard to try and ensure that it is reopened as soon as possible, and we will endeavour to keep [everyone] informed regarding our progress with the National Trust.

"On behalf of the Friends of Dalton Castle, the committee would like to apologise to anyone who was planning to visit in the coming weeks, but we hope to welcome [people] back to your castle as soon as possible."

Since the news broke, a number of residents in the area have shared their dismay at the development, with many contacting the National Trust for further explanations.

In a public response, General Manager of the National Trust, Dan Taylor, commented: "We appreciate that this is difficult news - the closure is necessary to ensure the continued safety of Dalton Castle's users and visitors, and that we, as a charity, adhere to our legal obligations.

"We sincerely appreciate the invaluable support of the National Trust volunteers and Friends of Dalton group.

"Their dedication is instrumental in our efforts to reopen the castle, and we eagerly anticipate the day when we can welcome you back to a safer and improved Dalton Castle."

Mr Taylor added that the trust would continue to update the community following any developments.

Upon being approached by The Evening Mail, the National Trust confirmed that there was a need to make the castle 'safe for visitors'.

The period of closure, the extent of which is still unknown, was said to have been put in place to 'ensure that [they] can keep welcoming visitors in the future'.
