Tributes have been paid to a respected Ulverston accountant who has died at the age of 90.

Kenneth Oliver (known as Ken) died peacefully on March 20 at Furness General Hospital in Barrow with his family by his side.

Originally from the North East, Mr Oliver came to Cumbria in the 1960s, working in the tax office in Ulverston.

He later trained as an accountant and tax consultant, ultimately setting up in private practice in King Street, Ulverston, a business he ran successfully for many years.

Devoted to his profession, Mr Oliver had no wish to retire and worked right up until shortly before his death – submitting clients’ tax returns in time for the January 31 deadline.

His wife of 48 years Elaine Oliver described her husband as 'always full of fun'.

She said: “He was a wonderful husband for nearly 50 years, with a great sense of humour. He will be very much missed by all his family and his many friends.”

Mr Oliver was a keen rugby union player and a long-standing member of Furness Rugby Club in Barrow. He was also a dedicated golfer, playing for many years at Ulverston Golf Club, where he served as captain in 1997, president in 2011 and 2012, and also served as honorary treasurer and secretary.

A spokesman for Ulverston Golf Club said: “Ken was a true gentleman and had been a member of the club since 1969.

“He was a well-known and well-loved member of the club and our deepest condolences go to his family and friends at this difficult time.”

Along with his wife Elaine, Mr Oliver is survived by four children - Deborah, Simon, Samantha and Jeremy; grandchildren Alexa, Jamie, Harry, Jessica and Jack; and by a great-grandson, Hugo.

Mr Oliver’s funeral will take place at 12.45pm on Friday April 12, at Ulverston Parish Church.
