Mountain rescue teams were called out to help two different families on the same Lake District fell.

Conditions were described as 'a grey and drizzly day with a low cloud base' when the first call-out came around 12.30pm on Monday from a family on The Old Man of Coniston.

The party had just got to the top and had started their descent when a woman in the group slipped and injured her wrist.

She felt unable to walk so her family called Cumbria Police for help who then contacted Coniston Mountain Rescue Team (CMRT).

She began to feel a bit better after some first aid from her qualified family member and was assisted slowly down the hill.

A spokesperson for CMRT said: "We despatched three Land Rovers in total to Bursting Stone quarry and walked up from there to meet the party. The lady was assessed, analgesia given, and she was well enough to be assisted down to our vehicles.

"We then drove her down to the family vehicle in the village, in which she was taken to Furness General Hospital for treatment."

15 volunteers attended the rescue which lasted for 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Then, less than four hours later, CMRT was called out a second time after another family descending the south side of the Old Man had an accident with a man slipping on rocks and injuring his ankle.

The group called for help around 3.50pm with North West Ambulance Service asking the volunteers to assist.

A CMRT spokesperson said : "We despatched three Land Rovers in total to the rock step on the Walna Scar track, and walked up the hill to Little Arrow Moor where the casualty was located.

"He was assessed, pain relief given and the ankle splinted. We then transferred him onto our stretcher and began a descent which could not be described as easy.

"When off the rocks, we were able to mount the stretcher on our wheel, which makes progress a little lighter for the team.

"Eventually, we arrived at our vehicles, and took him to our base. A family car came for him and he was driven to Furness General Hospital for further treatment."

12 volunteers attended this incident which lasted for 3 hours and 25 minutes.
