A THIEF has been sentenced after he stole over £50 worth of washing products from a discount shop in Barrow.

Keanu Logan pleaded guilty to stealing 14 items from Home Bargains on Dalton Road when he appeared at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court on April 3.

Prosecutor Peter Kelly said Logan was identified by police on CCTV with the items at 5:10 pm on September 22 last year.

In total, £52.86 worth of items were stolen, the court was told.

The police had sufficient evidence to charge the defendant under Operation Retail.

Mr Kelly told the court this meant Logan did not have to be interviewed by police about the offence.

The 29-year-old, of Storey Square in Barrow, was sentenced for being in possession of an offensive weapon at Preston Crown Court last month.

The court heard Logan had 38 previous convictions for theft.

Defence solicitor Michael Graham said: “The offence is unsophisticated. He had very problematic finances and is living from hand-to-mouth. The cost of food and other products are high from his perspective.”

The court heard the items were never recovered by the police.

Magistrates gave Logan a six-month conditional discharge for the offence and ordered that he pay every penny back to the store in compensation.

No order for court costs or a surcharge was made due to the defendant’s limited resources.
