The residents of Dalton are reported to have 'welcomed' a set of parking restrictions brought in by a local supermarket.

The Co-op store, on Market Street, announced on Wednesday (April 3) that it had 'no choice' but to introduce parking restrictions and fines at its car park.

The store said the move was due to a large number of complaints from both staff and customers.

The restrictions will limit people to one hour's parking except from 3pm-3.45pm where it will be 15 minutes.

Councillor for Dalton South Dave Taylor said it was a 'welcome initiative'.

He said many shoppers are 'finding it harder and harder' to park at the Co-op during school pick-up and drop-off times for Dowdales.

"Children coming from Barrow and surrounding area should be encouraged to use public transport if schooling in Dalton," he said.

"I am hopeful that this initiative by our Co-op won't affect business in Dalton or move the issue to another part of Dalton which would cause more chaos and add to our non stop parking issues throughout the town."

Facebook users largely welcomed the initiative.

One mum said: "Three times I’ve called there to shop but unable to park because of Dowdales parents waiting for their children."

One woman added: "Absolutely right. If you can't park in the Co-op car park you have to go somewhere else to shop."

Another said: "About time. Dowdales parents park in disabled places with no regard for anyone else."

Others such as Dalton Community Action group asked questions such as "Would the new parking restrictions be lifted at the weekend?"

The Mail has approached the Co-op and Dowdales school for comment.
