A SEX offender’s wife found items including children’s bras, underwear and a school uniform in his car, a court heard.

Peter Davies, formerly of Dalton, was caught in a paedophile hunting sting sexually communicating with a child decoy and is due to be sentenced next month.

The 45-year-old, who is now homeless, had several ‘concerning items’ relating to children on the day he was convicted, said Cumbria Constabulary lawyer Gemma Rogerson as she applied for an interim sexual risk order ahead of his sentencing.

Ms Rogerson applied for the order as police deem Davies to be a ‘high risk’ of reoffending before his sentencing at Preston Crown Court on May 7.

He admitted engaging in sexual communications with a child and causing or inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity between March 5–18 when he appeared at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court on March 25.

At South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court on April 3, Ms Rogerson said the defendant’s wife had found a work bag in his car which was found to contain children’s bras, underwear and school uniform, as well as condoms and other ‘concerning’ items.

As a result, magistrates felt it necessary to impose an interim sexual risk order until July 2.

Davies was also sentenced after admitting two drink driving offences.

Prosecutor Peter Kelly said the first offence occurred the day he was convicted. Police were called to a road traffic accident involving a black Alfa Romeo, he said.

Mr Kelly said Davies had driven his car into ‘difficulties’, attended a nearby pub and then later returned to attempt to recover the vehicle.

The court heard when officers arrived the front wheels were smoking as if the vehicle had been revved.

He was asked to conduct a roadside breath test which came back positive for alcohol. The lowest reading of which was 84 microgrammes in 100 millilitres of breath.

Davies was caught drink driving once again on March 31 after police received a report of the way that the same black Alfa Romeo was being driven, the court heard.

He was stopped by police in Booths at Ulverston where he was asked to provide another sample of breath, the court was told. The lowest reading was 73 micrograms.

Andy Gallagher, representing the defendant, said: “Until just a couple of weeks ago, this was a defendant of previous good character.

“This is a man whose life has spiralled downwards catastrophically. He is now at rock bottom.

“These offences are committed in consequence of him being made homeless. He has lost his employment and has made an application to claim state benefits.

“I hope you will appreciate the reason why he has committed two offences in short succession.”

Davies was confronted outside his home by an online child protection team called ‘365 Hunters’ after he had engaged in sexual communications with a decoy, who told him she was a 14-year-old girl.

For the drink driving offences, magistrates imposed a 12-month community order and banned Davies from driving for 36 months.

He was also ordered to complete 90 days of alcohol abstinence monitoring and 15 RAR days.

In addition, he was ordered to pay £85 in court costs and a £114 surcharge.
