A PROFESSIONAL singer is starting a queer choir to bring together Barrow's LGBTQIA+ community.

Becki Fishwick is setting up Barrow's very own fully inclusive choir for all members of the LGBTQIA+ community with the aim of performing together at Barrow Pride.

The project is being backed up by BarrowFull which made it possible for the two first sessions to be free of charge.

Becki said: "I’ve set up many singing groups and choirs over the years and had the idea to form a Queer choir to bring together Barrow’s LBTQIA+ community and celebrate being queer through performing together at Barrow Pride.

"I want to provide a safe space and a place to express yourself through performing, I know that navigating gender and sexuality can be difficult and very isolating for some of our community, so this is also a place to feel fully supported and make new friends along the way.

"We don’t use traditional sheet music and gendered voice parts or auditions but make singing accessible to all bringing queer people together through the joy of singing.

"Singers discover their own power by empowering others through song."

Helen Bartosinski, of BarrowFull, said: "Becki's queer choir is part of boosting Barrow's Creative so that is where we support local people who have a creative idea.

"We support them with resources, time and guidance and putting people in touch with the right people as well as with small amounts of money so that is boosting Barrow's Creative."

The singer has said that if both sessions go well she is planning to do it weekly.

The first free session is on Wednesday, March 27 from 6pm to 7.30pm followed by another on Wednesday, April 24.

Both sessions are set to be held at the Nan Tait Centre. Contact 07531938987 to book a free place.
