A THIEF has been jailed for stealing alcohol and food items from a number of different supermarkets in Barrow.

Darren Hughes, 50, of Newton Road in Dalton pleaded guilty to five counts of theft from a shop at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court on March 18.

According to court documents, the defendant stole alcohol including baileys and grey goose, as well as a woolly hat and three boxes of vanilla Nescafé coffee on another occasion.

Documents showed the offences were committed on separate occasions between January 9 and February 29 this year.

Items were stolen from Aldi Supermarket in the Hollywood retail park, B & M Home Store on Corner House Park and from Tesco stores around Barrow, the court heard.

In total £389.95 worth of items were taken, court documents showed.

Hughes also pleaded guilty to a single charge of going equipped for theft.

The particulars of the offence included being in possession of wire cutters in connection with theft on February 29.

The court heard the offences were committed during the operational period of a suspended sentence.

As a result of his guilty pleas at the first opportunity, magistrates jailed the Hughes for seven weeks.

He was also ordered to pay £303.90 in compensation back to the respective supermarkets.

No orders for costs were made.
