A Women's Institute in Cumbria has used its fundraising powers to back a nearby hospice.

The Egton-cum-Newton WI donated £2,300 to St Mary's Hospice, which is based in Ulverston.

The charity was chosen because of the support it has provided to their friends and family in the past, including a committee member.

Gill Tame said: “We were delighted to be able to support the hospice as we all sadly know or knew of someone who has needed their wonderful services.

"In fact, one of our own dear committee members was with them a few years ago now.

"We are extremely grateful not only to all their staff, but also to our own friends and villagers who supported us so generously over the past year which enabled us to donate the amount that we have."

The group added that they were looking forward to backing the hospice again going forward.
