FIVE school pupils from Dalton got to experience what it feels like to walk out on the pitch at Old Trafford.

The kids, from George Romney Junior School, were mascots for Manchester United's home game against Everton in the Premier League on Saturday.

They are all members of the school's Lego League team, which promotes STEM learning from an early age.

Declan Johnson, a Year Six pupil, said: "I can’t believe I actually got to meet the players and then walk out with Garnacho."

Qualcomm and IET, who sponsor First Lego League, organised the visit and enabled the five lucky children to enjoy the 'chance of a lifetime experience'.

They were presented with full replica kits for the event, had the chance to meet the team before the match, got photos and autographs with their favourite players and then, of course, escorted the team onto the pitch before the game.

David Reddy, headteacher and Lego League coach, was delighted to be able to support the experience for the children.

He said: "Having this opportunity was amazing for the children – they couldn’t believe it when I shared the exciting news with them and their family chaperones were pretty chuffed too."

The school has been working with Fran Ward from IET for a number of years, developing the children’s understanding of STEM learning and in particular developing their coding and problem solving skills in the context of the IET First Lego League competitions.

Last year the children were one of the three teams from across the northwest who represented their schools at the National Finals in Harrogate.

In the recent South Cumbria final at Furness College, the team of year five and six children were winners of the Innovation Project presentation.

Mr Reddy added: "The First Lego League ethos compliments our core values here in school and supports our shared aspiration for children - it also empowers them to learn real-life critical thinking skills and reflect positively on their progress.

"One of the first things the children did when they were back in school on Monday was to write a letter thanking Fran and the IET for the visit."
