A FUN-FILLED event where people can run, walk or jog for a mile with the town mayor is taking place in Barrow.

The Mayor's Mad Mile is an obstacle course for all through the town centre, with all money raised going to the mayor's charity fund.

The event will be taking place on Saturday, April 6, from 10am.

After the ten planned obstacles, the Mayor of Barrow Councillor Chris Altree will present the cheque to his chosen charities Cancer Care and Every Life Matters.

Cllr Altree said: "I wanted to create an event that could be annual. It is my idea that future mayors will take it forward and do it every year and hopefully, it will grow into a bigger event.

"I just wanted to create an event with people in the town centre. We have a bit of fun and we raise a bit of money for local good causes.

"Hopefully many people will join me as I go around and do the event. "You don't need to be a great runner. In theory, you can walk it or even jog or skip if you want. It is not a very competitive run."

The start of the event will be at the Spirit of Barrow statue, running down towards the bottom of Dalton Road to Portland Walk and back to the statue again.

Asking whether he feels confident to run in the event, Cllr Altree said: "We will see how it goes on the day in terms of my running ability.

"I will be wearing the chains but I won't wear the mayoral robes because they are incredibly old and I wouldn't want to damage them and be the mayor that damage the historic robes from the town council."

Participants who complete the course will be given a medal.
