A MAN caused over £1,000 worth of damage to an oncoming vehicle by throwing gravel at its windscreen, a court heard.

Jordan Riglar, 33, of Vernon Street, Barrow, pleaded guilty to criminal damage to property valued under £5,000 on the day of his trial at South Cumbria Magistrates Court.

Prosecutor Peter Kelly said an eyewitness saw the defendant stop his vehicle towards the entrance of BAE Systems before running onto the pavement to pick up a handful of gravel.

The court heard the observer then witnessed the defendant throw it at the windscreen of the complainant’s Ford Ranger who was driving towards him.

Mr Kelly said the complainant in the case then ‘made contact’ with the defendant’s Mercedes while he was sat in the vehicle.

The court was told the incident on November 25 2022 was investigated by police but no criminal proceedings followed.

Mr Kelly said the complainant lost his no claims bonus as a result of the defendant’s actions after £1,100 worth of damage was caused to his vehicle.

The court heard there had been a dispute between the two parties previously.

In mitigation, Michael Graham said: “The complainant side shunted the defendant almost off the road whilst he was sat in the driver's side of his car.

“This is a long time ago and sits between two other previous convictions.”

The court heard Riglar had ten other previous convictions for damage against a property.

Magistrates find the defendant £50 for the offence.

He was also ordered to pay £600 in costs for taking up the afternoon court listing, as well as a £20 surcharge.
