A holidaymaker discovered two abandoned guinea pigs while out for a walk with her dog yesterday (March 4).

The woman was out walking in Sea Wood at Bardsea when her pet showed interest in 'something' under a log.

This turned out to be a pair of ginger and white female guinea pigs.

The incident comes just two days after a guinea pig was found abandoned outside an east London tube station, with a note reading: "I need a new owner."

No items left with the Ulverston pair however and they were found quite near the road and parking area.

The guinea pigs have rex-type fur and are believed to be quite young judging by their teeth.

The animals were taken to Little Beasties pet shop in Ulverston where they were checked over by a vet.

They are reported to have no major signs of ill health however are a little underweight with one having a patch of fur missing.

A post on the Little Beasties Facebook page read: "The guinea pigs have obviously been abandoned in the woods.

"We don't know the circumstances of why they ended up there, the owner may of been struggling to care for them and thought that taking them to the woods was a good idea.

"This of course is not a good idea, it's very lucky they were found as they wouldn't have been able to survive for long.

"We have not seen any signs of any others but are keen to make sure whoever did leave them there is not struggling with any more animals that could also end up being abandoned.

"We would like to remind people there is help available if you can no longer take care of a pet and that abandoning a pet is against the law.

"It's unlikely they were stolen and then dumped but it is a possibility."
