A well-known takeaway owner in Ulverston is looking to plan his retirement at long last.

Pete Ridge, now 65, has been the face of The Kiosk in Victoria Road for 21 years but has revealed his decision to sell the business.

He wanted to make sure, however, that people knew that he would not be walking away unless a new owner came forward.

Pete said: "Really, it all started with a rush of blood to the head back in 2003.

"I'd never dreamt of owning a business like this, but our neighbour was actually the previous owner and asked us if we were interested.

"We said no initially because we had a family to think about but, in the end, we thought we'd have a go - and I reckon it's gone pretty well since then."

Over the two decades, Pete has made himself an integral part of the community, but championed those same locals for helping The Kiosk thrive.

"Without them, it wouldn't be anything like it is now - we were only to take the building off the council in 2011 because of the money brought in by people constantly visiting.

"I feel like those customers rely on us so it'd be nice to see it continue as a takeaway - I've been popping down to Siemens five days a week for 17 years now!"

Whether it has been through selling newspapers, sweets to schoolchildren or a range of hot and cold food, Pete and The Kiosk have grown to be a well established hit.

"It's been absolutely brilliant - the amount of different people we've spoken to and served and the amount of different cultures we interact with is unbelievable.

"We have this one American couple who, when they visit the area, the first thing they do after getting off the train is popping by for a bite to eat."

The only thing standing in the way of Pete and retirement is a buyer for the Kiosk coming forward, with the current owner only leaving if it is in safe hands.
