A section of one of the county's most perilous roads will be closed for up to two weeks for roadworks.

Highways said the section of the U4059, also known as Hardknott Pass, will be closed, and an alternative route will be in place as a diversion during this time.

The roadworks are expected to take place from March 4 to March 15 this year.

These works are to 'repair various masonry walls along the length of Hardknott Pass', particularly between Cockley Beck Road to Gubbergill.

Yesterday afternoon, police reported a lorry 'getting into difficulty on route' on Hardknott Pass, and motorists were asked to avoid the area if possible while recovery work took place.

The alternative route that Highways said is going to be in place is via the C4028, The Crook, C4026, Austhwaite Brow, and the unrestricted sections of the U4059.
