A Cumbrian quarrying company exhibited a unique locally-sourced curling stone at a national trade show.

Burlington Stone, part of the Holker Group, showcased the creation at The Surface Design show.

It was held from February 4 to 6 at the Business Design Centre in Islington.

The company appeared as part of the Stone Federation of Great Britain's Knowledge Hub, which introduced architects and designers to a range of materials for natural stone projects.

The curling stone piece was conceived by Rob Harris, the southern area sales manager at Burlington Stone, as a method to draw the crowds to their booth.

In a twist on traditional curling stones, which must be hewn from Ailsa Craig granite, this unique version was constructed out of slate sourced from the firm's four active quarries in the Lake District.

Four types of slate and stone were bond together and polished, resulting in an eye-catching sculpture that reportedly proved very popular at the event.

Mr Harris said: "It brought a lot of people to our plinth, and I’m really pleased with how it turned out."

Notably, this is the fifth time the manager has taken part in the exhibition, viewing it as a critical opportunity to raise awareness of Burlington Stone.

Mr Harris further explained: "It’s not open to the general public, it’s very much a trade and interior designer/architect-led show, so they recognise quality and work in the high end surface space".

He believes the raised profile will encourage designers and architects to see the merits of using their stone on future projects.
