Hundreds of people turned out to Ulverston's Roxy Cinema to see the much-anticipated film Cumbrian Red: Saving Our Red Squirrels.

Award-winning Lake District filmmaker Terry Abraham attended the screening himself to answer questions after he spent the best part of two years filming the red 'scamps'.

The project was a 'labour of love' for the self-taught Eden Valley photographer, who was inspired to make an educational film after volunteering for the Penrith and District Red Squirrel Group.

The film shows the enormous effort that goes into red squirrel conservation by interviewing scientists, rangers, conservationists and locals.

South Lakes Red Squirrel group has worked for many years to protect the species in the area and managed to secure the Ulverston screening, along with one at Barrow's Forum Theatre on March 20.

Around 235 people turned out to see the film.

The Mail: Scores of people pour in to Roxy Cinema

Mike Frear, who attended and runs Canny Hill Red Squirrel Group, said: "It's a cracking film - I've seen it a few times. I'm super proud of what South Lakes Red Squirrel group achieved.

"There were 48 online bookings so we were blown away by the amount of people that turned up."
