A school in Barrow is finally set to see it get the 'urgent' repairs it has been waiting over a year for.

The main building at Sacred Heart Catholic Primary and Nursery School has been closed since January 2023.

On Thursday, the Minister for the School System and Student Finance confirmed to MP Simon Fell that the school was provisionally being prioritised for the School Rebuilding Programme.

Mr Fell, the MP for Barrow and Furness, said: "I’m absolutely delighted to have received the news from Baroness Barran.

"Mrs Beach and her team have done an incredible job in the most difficult of circumstances - supported by the local community and schools - providing education and pastoral care across multiple sites since their building was effectively closed."

Structural issues reported in the main building last year meant that it was not safe for pupils to occupy.

Baroness Barran explained that there was an 'urgent and severe need to rebuild'.

She added: "We plan to replace or refurbish one or more buildings at this school, as appropriate for the condition of the buildings on its site.

"This will greatly improve the learning environment at this school for years to come."

The school itself was quick to celebrate the 'exciting news' when it was officially revealed on Friday.

The School Rebuilding Programme aims to tackle buildings in the poorest condition to create safe and modern buildings where young people can gain the knowledge and skills they need to excel.

As recently as January this year, Mr Fell was campaigning on behalf of Sacred Heart School to bring about the progress they desperately needed.

"I’m incredibly grateful to them and very much hope that this marks the beginning of the end of that chapter," the MP said.

"My massive thanks to Baroness Barran, Gillian Keegan [Secretary of State for Education], and the fantastic Department for Education team for working with me and listening to case put forward by the team at Mater Christi and Sacred Heart."
